Walk-in Tub Install
No two bathrooms are the same, and most homeowners will have specific questions and concerns about their home and their install. This how-to guide is just a basic of how the installation process works.
Removing Existing Tub and Shower
The first thing that needs to be done is that shower and tub will need to be removed. Typically, this involves using a Sawzall to cut the bathtub liner and tub into manageable pieces that can easily be removed from your home. Your facet and any showerheads and glass doors you may have will also be removed during this process.
Electrical Lines
Most walk-in tubs will need an electrical line to operate, and your installer will need to run one. This is done by located an existing outlet on the wall adjacent to the tub. A new line can be run, and a GFI outlet is mounted to the motor of the walk-in tub. GFI outlets are used because they have a surge protector and are for your safety around water.
Prep Water and Drain Lines
The next step is making sure the water is turned off so the water and drain lines can be prepped for your new walk-in tub. This involves removing the existing connection to the tub and adding a new water connection. Next is turning the water back on and testing the connection. You may not need new water and drain lines, depending on your tub install. This is something you can discuss with your installer.
New Sheetrock
If you had an existing tub and shower that was one piece, you might have to get new sheetrock installed around the opening to make the walls and ceiling flush. Typically shower wallboards will be installed as this helps protect walls from the water.
Bring in the Tub
Putting the tub in place is not as challenging as it looks. Once the tub has been set in place, it can be leveled using the leveling legs. The tub will be checked from left to right, corner to corner, and front to back to make sure it is perfectly level.
Finishing Touches
Once the new tub has been installed and level, it is time for the finishing touches. This can differ depending on your tub needs, but this can include installing trim on the walls and around the tub, caulking and sealing all the joints, and cleaning the tub.
Checking the Work
You should request a test run after your installer has put everything together and did the finishing touches. This means the installer fills the tub with water and drains it to make sure everything is working correctly. They should also show you how to operate your new walk-in tub and help with any questions you may have about your new bathroom.
Tips
When you are getting a walk-in tub installed in your home, do not be afraid to ask your installer questions. Make sure they test your new tuba and drains and that it is working correctly. They should also demonstrate how the new tub works for you.
